I guess that everyone who has been playing an instrument for a while knows about Gear Acquisition Syndrome, the desire to buy more and better equipment. It seems it is a hot topic not only for musicians, but for photographers as well.
I first heard about G.A.S a long time ago, but only recently I found out that there's even a Wikipedia article. And now I know that the term was coined by none less than Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame. So it seems that practising alone won't help dealing with the problem…
But at least, as you gain experience, you also learn that equipment does not only mean cool basses and amplifiers, but a lot of little stuff. So my current G.A.S. list has profane stuff like:
- Rack drawer
- A bunch of new XLR and guitar leads
- A case for my effect pedals
- …and of course a cool six-string ;-)
There's one point I already settled: Aldi offered a nice cart last week, which will help me lug my gear around.
Warum muss das gute Zeug nur immer so teuer sein? Meine E-Gitarrencombo hat über den Sommer den Geist aufgegeben - aber so ein kleiner Engel kostet soviel...

Ich habe mir gesagt: ich kauf mir neue Ware erst, wenn bessere Aussichten auf bezahlte Gigs bestehen. Müsste komplett alles neu haben - Bass, Amp, Box. Das ist eifach zu viel Geld auf's Mal, wenn nichts rein kommt...
Manchmal hilft's auch, wenn man Stück für Stück erneuert - ein neuer Bass hilft z.B. sehr, den Amp auszuhalten, finde ich. Wobei, ich kann da nicht gut mitreden, ich bin seit Jahren mit meinem kleinen Glockenklang zufrieden :-).
PS: Und ja, es lohnt sich, gutes Zeug zu kaufen, auch wenn's weh tut…
