A trip to Eyb Guitars

My Tobias has been having little but very annoying dropouts lately. Today, I finally managed to drop by Günter Eyb (Eyb Guitars) for him to take a look at it.

Eyb is of course well known and his instruments are reviewed regularly in guitar magazines, but I only got to know a while ago just how close I live to one of the most famous instrument luthiers of Germany. So it was high time to pay him a visit.

I had a very nice time there. The bass probably can be fixed easily, I got some stuff for another bass I'm working on and of course I took a look at the basses that Günther Eyb builds. I especially liked one five-string: The body was made (I think) of alder, with a translucent blue finish, with a maple neck and a MM/jazz bass pickup combination that allows for a wide range of sounds. I especially liked the fact that the bass can be used both actively and passively and that the MM pickup can be switched between parallel and single-coil mode. And the workmanship is of course first-class. A variation of that with six strings probably would be close to being my dream bass… So that was helpful input for my search for a new bass.
